Major TM1 Servers Outages to Begin in November 2016

by Colin Quinn

On November 24, 2016 your TM1 and Cognos Express servers will become inaccessible to your users!

Why is this happening?

The SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificate bundled with IBM TM1 and Cognos Express expire on November 24, 2016. This certificate is used to encrypt communication between clients and the TM1 server.

IBM’s Urgent Message to all on premise Cognos TM1 and Cognos Express Customers!

What does this mean?

As of the expiration date, all communication to the TM1 server will fail. The TM1 server itself will continue to operate, however the TM1 server will be unreachable to all clients. This includes communication with Perspectives, Architect, Performance Modeler, CAFÉ, and Cognos Insight.

Who does it impact?

All non-cloud TM1 users who are not using customer certificates or have not updated to the TM1 v2 certificates. If you’ve never modified the initial TM1 configurations for SSL certificates you will most likely be impacted.

What TM1 versions does it impact?

All versions of TM1 are affected by the certificate expiration.

Can the expiration date be postponed?

No, once an expiration date has been defined and built into a certificate the date cannot be changed or extended without invalidating the certificate.

What can you do?

There are 4 options:

  1. Manually apply certificate updates
  2. Apply an interim fix updater
  3. Secure IBM Cognos TM1 with custom certificates
  4. Switch to the IBM Cognos TM1 v2 certificates (TM1 10.2.2. FP4 IF1+ only)
